Daves Blog - 12 May, 2012

Another superb gig at Fleece Jazz. Was it a disappointment that Vincent Herring was not there? Well yes, but Alex Garnett was on the CD with Vincent, Michael Janisch, Steve Brown and Leon Greening, and he played his ass off (to use Peter King's phrase).

The evening had all kinds of special moments. Just three for you: in the first set, Michael and Steve traded twos on a Feldman tune, and it was if they were old chess adversaries. Maybe that is a bad analogy, as they were both grinning like little kids, which on Steve is a sight to behold. In the second set, Leon's solo on a Cedar Walton tune was breathtaking. I was sitting so that Leon had his back to me. He was wearing a dark blue suit, hunched over the keyboard as if he was going to eat it, hands moving at speed. The front was off of the piano, and you could see the chords forming and changing, flying by. Alex's playing throughout was accurate and emotional. He is particularly fine on ballads.

The audience enjoyed the gig greatly, so that was good too. If you have any time for the clarinet at all, next Friday will be a special treat, with Julian Mark Stringle on clarinet and sax, Dominic Ashworth on guitar, Chris Dodds on bass and Mike Bradley on drums. Do join us.

Take care,
