Ray Gelato Giants - 21 June, £20

With the Ray Gelato Big Band, dancing and a buffet available from 7pm till after the interval. Music doors open at 7.30.

The Devora Suite will be graced by one of the best swing bands in Europe. Spruce up your jive, bring your dancing shoes, or just enjoy first class big band music from the master, Ray Gelato.

From Jim Connell, "Ray, a wonderful sax player and superb frontman, is a London boy heavily influenced by the likes of Sinatra, Bennet and Prima, and with his 'Italiano/Americano/Big-Band-Gangster-Jazz-Band' at full pelt, it felt like a Scorsese movie. Dressed in sharp suits the band thundered through two sets of fantastic music, mainly classics, with a few songs penned by Ray himself."

With Alan Barnes reeds & David Newton piano.

And both of them with stories to tell. We have enjoyed these great musicians in duo form with others in the past, but not together.

Don't miss this special evening.

Daves Blog - 15 June 2013

Mari Wilson, Alistair Gavin and James Nisbet delighted us last night.

One talks about singers that tell good stories, but Mari both sings and narrates stories. Technically she is so spot on that you don't see the technique even if you are looking for it. She sang stuff from her new album, some familiar, some not, with a range of emotional content. She is so in tune with her material that the audience is drawn closely in.

Alistair is a "go to" accompanist, I am told by many singers. He is unfussy on the piano, and always seems to be in the head of the singer. He did a stint as a backing singer in one number as well.

James plays an acoustic guitar, no stomp boxes. He wrings the biggest range of tonalities out of it that I have heard. When asked, he says his left hand is his stomp box array. He gets tons of senior work as a session musician and it is clear why. He is a very good backing singer as well.

Next week will be special. We are in the Devora Suite, with an excellent buffet available, and arguably the best swing band in Europe, so bring your dancing shoes, or just sit back and enjoy the music.

See you there,
take care,
