Alan Skidmore Quartet - Friday, 19 February 8.00 - Ticket £17

British jazz legend, saxophonist Alan Skidmore goes a considerable way to recreating the atmosphere of a John Coltrane gig. Here is a man for all seasons, a player with immense physical and imaginative stamina, who is at home in any context, from tight structures to total abstraction, and with any tempo, from breakneck to slow. With Steve Melling piano, Geoff Gascoyne bass and drummer supreme Tony Levin.

Daves Blog - February 6th, 2010

In my email to some of you I said that this was my gig of the season. I was not wrong. Two people, Dylan Howe and Will Butterworth, in each others minds, in the mind of Igor Stravinsky, thinking of Bernstein's recording of "Firebird" and "Rites of Spring" and producing the most extraordinary music. In looking for superlatives (a problem with me), "extraordinary" applies.

I will make no attempt at description. Catch their youtube entry if you were not there. The music is there, and is wonderful, but just being there was a joy to SEE the interaction. Enough. I wish more of you were there to see it.

Next week, POP BOB, proper jazz based on pop tunes with a great band, and the week after that the welcome return of Alan Skidmore, with a great band including Tony Levin on drums. This one I get to record, so do come and be part of it.

Take care,
