Daves Blog - July 24th, 2010

Sorry for the delay of a day, but I spent a glorious day at Thornham Walled Garden working with disabled clients.

And this after a glorious evening in the company of Esther Miller. She has a stunning voice with a big range. She can tell a story. She has no fear of trying something new. She presents beautifully. She is gorgeous. She is engaged, oh well.

A good evening indeed, with a good audience for this South African singer, and her excellent band, led by her musical director, Steve Melling, and with Steve Waterman on trumpet and flugel, John Perry playing the room on drums, and dep Dave Chamberlain who sounded as if he had played with her forever.

Her fare was lots of blues, ballads, bop and excellent vocalese in Xosa and Africaans and (mostly) English. My helper Jamie was obviously in love.

Thanks to him for all the help, and always to J.J. and Dougy. Having punters help you derig is such a boon - quick and accurate.

The sound was great in the first set. At least I and most of the audience agreed, but some claimed that they couldn't hear Esther well, so I diddled in the second set, and took a while to find a good balance. I liked it better even so in the first. It is not necessary to have the singer in your ear and the band next door. She can be up front without that much exaggeration. Also I seem to have a singer mic (Beta SM58A) with extreme handling noise, fine when not being touched. Don't know what to do about that.

Take care,
